Why Jamsil Is One of the Best Places to Visit in Seoul

I was born and raised in Seoul, and I have lived in Jamsil for more than 40 years. I have watched this neighborhood change from a largely residential area into one of Seoul’s busiest destinations.
Travelers usually know Jamsil for Lotte World and Lotte World Tower. For those of us who live here, however, it is also where we walk around the lake, meet friends for dinner, shop with our families, and discover new restaurants and cafés.
Think of me as your local Jamsil uncle. I will tell you what is genuinely worth seeing, when a schedule may be too ambitious, and how to enjoy the neighborhood without rushing.
If this is your first visit, these five places will give you a good introduction to Jamsil.
1. Have Fun at Lotte World
Lotte World is one of Korea’s best-known amusement parks. It has two main areas: the indoor Lotte World Adventure and the outdoor Magic Island.
The indoor section makes it a convenient destination during Korea’s hot summers, cold winters, and rainy days. Families, couples, and groups of friends come for the rides, parades, seasonal events, and photo spots.
You can easily spend an entire day here. If Lotte World is the main reason for your visit, do not try to fit every other Jamsil attraction into the same day.
My local take: Weekends and Korean school holidays can be extremely busy. Visit on a weekday morning if your schedule allows it.
2. Explore Lotte World Mall
Next to the amusement park is Lotte World Mall, a large complex combining shopping, restaurants, cafés, entertainment, exhibitions, and contemporary Korean culture.
The complex includes fashion and lifestyle stores, a cinema, an aquarium, restaurants, cafés, and regularly changing pop-up events. It is also useful when Seoul is extremely hot, cold, or rainy.
Even if shopping is not your main purpose, the mall is worth seeing because it shows how modern Seoul combines retail, food, leisure, and culture in one space.
My local take: The complex is larger than many first-time visitors expect. Choose the places that interest you instead of trying to explore every floor.
3. See Seoul from Above
Jamsil is home to Lotte World Tower, the tallest building in Korea.
Near the top of the tower is Seoul Sky, Korea’s highest observatory. From approximately 500 meters above the city, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Seoul, the Han River, and the surrounding metropolitan area.
Late afternoon is one of the best times to visit. On a clear day, you can see Seoul in daylight, watch the sunset, and stay until the city lights appear.
My local take: The experience is much better on a clear day. If the sky is hazy or rainy, enjoy the mall and lake first and save Seoul Sky for better weather.
4. Walk Around Seokchon Lake
Seokchon Lake offers a peaceful contrast to the amusement park, shopping mall, and busy streets nearby.
Local residents come here to walk, jog, meet friends, and take photographs. The lake is especially famous for cherry blossoms in spring, but every season creates a different atmosphere.
The walking path connects Jamsil’s main attractions naturally. You can walk from Lotte World and Lotte World Tower toward Songridan-gil without taking a taxi or bus.
My local take: Early morning is calm and feels very local. After dinner, the lake becomes livelier with couples, families, and residents taking an evening walk.
5. Eat and Relax in Songridan-gil
Across from Seokchon Lake is Songridan-gil, one of the most popular dining and café neighborhoods among young Koreans and trend-conscious locals.
The area is filled with independent restaurants, stylish cafés, dessert shops, small boutiques, and photogenic streets. New businesses open regularly, so there is usually something different to discover.
Competition among restaurants here is strong. Everyone has different preferences, but many places offer food and service that are comfortably above average.
My local take: Do not worry if the most famous restaurant has a long line. Walk one or two streets farther and you will usually find another good option.
How to Spend One Day in Jamsil
A simple Jamsil itinerary could look like this:
Morning: Lotte World
Lunch: Lotte World Mall
Late afternoon: Seokchon Lake
Dinner or coffee: Songridan-gil
Sunset or evening: Seoul Sky
Trying to experience all five places in one day can feel rushed.
If Lotte World is your main destination, spend most of the day inside the park and visit Seoul Sky or Songridan-gil on another day.
If you are not interested in amusement rides, skip Lotte World and enjoy a slower half-day route through Lotte World Mall, Seokchon Lake, Songridan-gil, and Seoul Sky.
Why Jamsil Is Worth Visiting
Jamsil is more than the home of Lotte World. It is a neighborhood where entertainment, shopping, architecture, food, nature, and Seoul’s latest trends come together within a relatively compact area.
It also has a deeper story. The meaning of the name “Jamsil,” the history of Songpa, the development of the Han River area, and the 1988 Seoul Olympics all helped shape the neighborhood we see today.

1. 롯데월드 즐기기
롯데월드는 한국을 대표하는 놀이공원 중 하나입니다. 실내 공간인 롯데월드 어드벤처와 야외 공간인 매직아일랜드로 구성되어 있습니다.
실내 공간이 있어 한국의 더운 여름과 추운 겨울, 비 오는 날에도 방문하기 좋습니다. 가족, 연인과 친구들이 놀이기구와 퍼레이드, 계절 행사와 다양한 촬영 장소를 즐기기 위해 찾습니다.
롯데월드에서는 하루 전체를 보낼 수 있습니다. 롯데월드가 잠실을 찾는 가장 중요한 목적이라면 주변 명소까지 같은 날 전부 보려고 무리할 필요는 없습니다.
현지인의 한마디: 주말과 한국의 학교 방학 기간에는 매우 혼잡할 수 있습니다. 가능하면 평일 오전에 방문하는 것을 추천합니다.
2. 롯데월드몰 둘러보기
놀이공원 옆에는 쇼핑과 식사, 카페, 영화, 전시와 현대적인 한국 문화를 한 공간에서 경험할 수 있는 롯데월드몰이 있습니다.
패션과 생활용품 매장, 영화관, 아쿠아리움, 식당, 카페와 수시로 바뀌는 팝업스토어를 만나볼 수 있습니다. 서울의 날씨가 너무 덥거나 춥고 비가 많이 오는 날에도 방문하기 좋습니다.
현지인의 한마디: 처음 온 여행자가 예상하는 것보다 규모가 큽니다. 모든 층을 전부 보려고 하기보다 관심 있는 장소를 정하고 여유 있게 즐기는 편이 좋습니다.
3. 높은 곳에서 서울 바라보기
잠실에는 한국에서 가장 높은 건물인 롯데월드타워가 있습니다.
타워 상층부의 서울스카이는 약 500m 높이에 위치한 한국 최고층 전망대입니다. 전망대에서는 서울과 한강, 수도권 일대를 넓게 내려다볼 수 있습니다.
맑은 날의 늦은 오후가 방문하기 가장 좋은 시간대 중 하나입니다. 낮의 서울과 일몰을 감상한 뒤 도시의 야경이 시작될 때까지 머물 수 있습니다.
현지인의 한마디: 흐린 날 무리해서 올라갈 필요는 없습니다. 하늘이 흐리거나 비가 온다면 먼저 쇼핑몰과 호수를 즐기고 날씨가 좋은 날 방문하는 편이 좋습니다.
4. 석촌호수 산책하기
석촌호수는 놀이공원과 쇼핑몰, 복잡한 도심에서 잠시 벗어나 여유를 느낄 수 있는 공간입니다.
지역 주민들은 호수를 산책하거나 달리고, 친구를 만나고 사진을 찍기 위해 방문합니다. 특히 봄철 벚꽃으로 유명하지만 계절마다 서로 다른 분위기를 느낄 수 있습니다.
현지인의 한마디: 이른 아침에는 조용하고 현지 주민들의 일상적인 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 저녁 식사 이후에는 산책하는 연인과 가족들로 조금 더 활기차집니다.
5. 송리단길에서 식사와 카페 즐기기
석촌호수 건너편에는 젊은 한국인과 유행에 민감한 사람들이 즐겨 찾는 송리단길이 있습니다.
개성 있는 식당과 카페, 디저트 가게, 작은 상점과 사진 찍기 좋은 골목이 모여 있습니다. 새로운 매장이 계속 생기기 때문에 방문할 때마다 다른 장소를 발견할 수 있습니다.
현지인의 한마디: 가장 유명한 식당의 대기 줄이 길다고 걱정하지 마세요. 한두 골목 더 걸으면 또 다른 괜찮은 식당을 발견할 가능성이 높습니다.
잠실에서 하루 보내는 방법
오전: 롯데월드
점심: 롯데월드몰
늦은 오후: 석촌호수
저녁 또는 카페: 송리단길
일몰 또는 저녁: 서울스카이
다섯 곳을 하루에 모두 방문하면 일정이 촉박할 수 있습니다.
롯데월드가 주목적이라면 놀이공원에서 하루 대부분을 보내고 서울스카이나 송리단길은 다른 날 방문하는 것이 좋습니다.
잠실을 방문할 가치가 있는 이유
잠실은 단순히 롯데월드가 있는 지역이 아닙니다. 놀이와 쇼핑, 건축, 음식, 자연과 서울의 최신 유행을 비교적 좁은 지역 안에서 모두 경험할 수 있습니다.
