Apple Watch Series 12 42mm Review: Real Photos, Wrist Size & Apple Jamsil Purchase

Apple Watch Series 12 42mm Review: Is the Smaller Size Actually Better?

I bought the Apple Watch Series 12 42mm GPS in Light Gold from Apple Jamsil in Seoul on September 19, 2026, just one day after it went on sale in Korea.

Rather than writing another specification-only review, I wanted to show what the 42mm model actually looks like in real life — including the unboxing, the Light Gold finish, a black Sport Band, and how it fits on different wrist sizes.

My first impression was simple:

The 42mm Series 12 feels much larger on screen than the “42mm” name suggests.

That became even more obvious when I placed it next to a 44mm Apple Watch SE 3.

Quick Answer

The Apple Watch Series 12 42mm is a particularly good size if you want a large usable display without the watch itself looking oversized.

The 42mm aluminum model measures 42mm × 37mm × 9.7mm, weighs 32.2g in the GPS version, and has a 970mm² display area. Apple rates the display at up to 2,000 nits, while battery life is rated at up to 24 hours under normal use.

For me, the biggest surprise wasn't any single specification. It was the proportion between the case and the screen.

Buying It at Apple Jamsil in Seoul

I purchased this watch directly from Apple Jamsil, inside Lotte World Mall in Songpa-gu, Seoul.

Apple Jamsil is located on the first floor of Lotte World Mall at 300 Olympic-ro, Songpa-gu, Seoul.

Because Korea Daybook is based around local experiences in Seoul, I wanted to buy the watch locally and document the process rather than relying only on Apple's product images.

Unboxing the Series 12

Apple's packaging is still extremely minimal.

Inside, the watch and the band are packaged separately, while the magnetic USB-C charging cable sits underneath the watch.

The model I chose is the 42mm Light Gold aluminum case paired with a black Sport Band.

Apple currently offers the Series 12 aluminum version in Dark Bronze, Light Gold, Black and Space Gray.

Light Gold Looks Better in Person

The color was one of my biggest questions before buying it.

“Light Gold” sounds as if it could be very yellow or flashy, but in person it is much more restrained.

Depending on the light, it can look somewhere between champagne gold and a warm silver.

With a black band, the contrast works particularly well.

For someone who wears both casual clothes and more formal outfits, I think this finish is easier to match than a brighter traditional gold.

How Does 42mm Look on a 14.5–15cm Wrist?

This was one of the most useful real-world tests.

We tried the 42mm Series 12 on a wrist measuring roughly 14.5–15cm.

It fits surprisingly naturally.

The case doesn't appear to extend excessively beyond the wrist, while the screen remains large enough to read comfortably.

For smaller wrists, I would not assume that 42mm is “too big” simply because it is the larger-looking modern Apple Watch design.

And on a 17.5–18cm Wrist?

I also tried the same 42mm watch on a wrist of approximately 17.5–18cm.

It obviously looks more restrained than a 46mm Apple Watch would, but that isn't necessarily a disadvantage.

If you wear jackets, shirts or suits frequently, the 42mm size has a more traditional watch-like proportion.

Display: 42mm Doesn't Mean a Small Screen

This is probably the most interesting part of the Series 12 42mm.

Apple lists a display area of 970mm² with a resolution of 374 × 446 pixels. The display is an LTPO3 wide-angle OLED Always-On Retina display with brightness up to 2,000 nits.

That becomes particularly interesting when compared with the 44mm SE 3.

Despite the SE being physically taller, its display area is 977mm².

In other words, the usable screen areas are almost identical.

Battery and Charging

Apple rates the Series 12 for up to 24 hours of normal use and up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode.

Apple also says it can reach around 80% charge in approximately 30 minutes.

That is an important upgrade if you want to use the watch for both daytime activity and sleep tracking.

Since this is a newly purchased watch, I'll update this article later with longer-term real-world battery results rather than pretending that an initial impression is a long-term battery test.

That distinction matters.

What I Like So Far

The biggest strengths aren't simply the new chip or feature list.

The Series 12 42mm feels like Apple has made better use of the physical size of the watch.

The case is compact, the screen is large, the Light Gold finish is subtle, and the watch is thin enough to sit comfortably under a shirt cuff.

Apple also gives the Series 12 the S11 chip, ECG capability, blood oxygen features where available, wrist-temperature sensing, a depth gauge and water-temperature sensor.

Final Thoughts

If you are deciding between the 42mm and 46mm Series 12, don't choose based only on the number.

42mm is no longer a particularly small-looking Apple Watch.

On a smaller wrist it looks proportional, while on a medium-to-large wrist it creates a more understated appearance.

For me, the most impressive part is that Apple managed to put almost the same display area as a 44mm SE 3 into a significantly more compact body.
