Why Is Jamsil Called Jamsil? Songpa’s History and the 1988 Seoul Olympics
JAMSIL SERIES · PART 2
This article is written in English. A Korean translation is available at the end of the post.
When people see Jamsil today, they usually think of Lotte World, high-rise apartments, shopping malls, stadiums, and busy streets.
But the name “Jamsil” comes from something much quieter: silkworms and mulberry trees.
I was born and raised in Seoul and have lived in Jamsil for more than 40 years. The neighborhood I remember from my childhood was already modernizing quickly, but its older history remains hidden in its name, landscape, and street names.
Here is the story behind Jamsil and Songpa.
What Does the Name “Jamsil” Mean?
The Korean name Jamsil is written as 잠실 in Hangul and 蠶室 in Chinese characters.
蠶 means “silkworm,” and 室 means “room” or “house.” The name therefore means a place or room where silkworms were raised.
During the Joseon Dynasty, King Sejong encouraged sericulture—the raising of silkworms and production of silk. Mulberry trees were planted in this area, and a royal silkworm-raising facility known as Dongjamsil, or the Eastern Silkworm Room, was established.
Silk produced here was presented to the royal court, and the quality and quantity of production were carefully managed.
My local take:
"It can be surprising to imagine mulberry trees and silkworms when standing among today’s towers and apartment complexes. The name Jamsil is one of the few everyday reminders of what this area was like long before modern development."
Jamsil Was Once Shaped by the Han River
The geography of Jamsil was very different from what visitors see today.
The Jamsil and Sincheon area was associated with a low-lying island and floodplain formed by the Han River. Even in the early twentieth century, mulberry trees were still common in parts of the area. Later, much of the land was used for vegetable farming.
A major Han River development project in 1971 connected the Jamsil area to the southern bank. River channels were altered, land was reclaimed, and the neighborhood began changing rapidly.
Seokchon Lake is closely connected to this transformation. The lake was once part of the Han River system before reclamation and river engineering changed the flow of water. It was later developed into the urban lake we know today.
My local take:
"When local residents walk around Seokchon Lake today, most people see it as a park. Knowing that its story is connected to the old Han River landscape makes the walk feel a little different."
Songpa Has a Much Older History
Jamsil is part of Songpa-gu, but Songpa’s history goes back far beyond the Joseon Dynasty.
The Songpa area was one of the most important centers of the early Baekje kingdom. According to historical records, Baekje was founded in 18 BCE and remained based in the Hanseong area for nearly five centuries before moving its capital to Ungjin, present-day Gongju, in 475.
Important Baekje sites in Songpa include:
- • Pungnaptoseong Fortress
- • Mongchontoseong Fortress
- • Seokchon-dong Ancient Tombs
- • Bangi-dong Ancient Tombs
These places show that Songpa was an important political and cultural center long before Seoul became the capital of the Joseon Dynasty.
The name “Songpa” is commonly understood to mean a slope or hill covered with pine trees.
My local take:
"Visitors often come to Songpa for modern attractions without realizing they are walking through one of Seoul’s oldest historical areas. If you enjoy history, the Seoul Baekje Museum and Mongchontoseong inside Olympic Park are worth adding to your route."
How the 1988 Seoul Olympics Changed the Area
The 1988 Seoul Olympic Games played a major role in shaping modern Jamsil and Songpa.
The Jamsil Sports Complex and Olympic Park became the centers of the Games. New roads, sports facilities, parks, housing, transportation, and urban infrastructure were developed across southeastern Seoul.
Jamsil Olympic Stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies, while nearby venues were used for swimming, basketball, baseball, and other events.
Olympic Park was created around Mongchontoseong, combining modern sports facilities with an ancient Baekje fortress. This is why visitors can find Olympic monuments, museums, sculpture gardens, walking trails, and ancient history in the same park.
The Olympics did more than create stadiums. They helped introduce South Korea’s rapid development to an international audience and accelerated the transformation of Jamsil and Songpa into a major urban district.
My local take:
"For people of my generation, “88 Olympics” is not simply a history-book event. Its symbols, buildings, roads, and even the name Olympic-ro are still part of everyday life in Songpa."
From Silkworm Fields to Modern Seoul
Jamsil’s transformation is remarkable.
The area changed from a riverside landscape of mulberry trees, farms, and waterways into a district of apartments, sports venues, parks, shopping complexes, and Korea’s tallest building.
But the old stories have not disappeared completely.
You can still find them in:
- • The name Jamsil
- • Seokchon Lake
- • Mongchontoseong and the Baekje remains
- • Olympic Park and Olympic-ro
- • Jamsil Sports Complex
- • The historical sites spread across Songpa
This combination of ancient history, modern development, and everyday neighborhood life is what makes Songpa different from many other parts of Seoul.
