T-money Card Korea – How to Buy It and Use Seoul Public Transport
Seoul has one of the most convenient public transportation systems in the world.
But when you first look at the subway map, it may not feel that way.
There are many lines.
Many colors.
Large transfer stations.
And some stations seem to have an unbelievable number of exits.
Fortunately, you only need two things to make Seoul public transportation much easier:
A transportation card and a good navigation app.
For most first-time visitors, I recommend starting with a T-money card.
Buy the card.
Add some Korean won.
Tap when you enter.
Tap again when you leave.
That is the basic system.
Quick Answer
For most travelers:
Buy a T-money card at a convenience store or Seoul subway location.
A standard card generally costs around KRW 3,000–5,000.
Add approximately KRW 20,000–40,000 depending on the length of your stay.
Keep some Korean cash available for recharging.
Tap when entering and exiting the subway.
Tap when getting on and getting off the bus.
Always tap out if you want the correct transfer discount.
Install NAVER Map before traveling around Seoul.
That is enough to get started.
What Is a T-money Card?
T-money is a rechargeable prepaid transportation card.
Instead of buying a new ticket every time you use public transportation, you put money on the card.
Each journey automatically deducts the appropriate fare.
T-money can be used across a wide range of public transportation in Korea, and VisitKorea lists it for buses, subways and other affiliated transportation and retail services.
For a tourist, the most important uses are:
Subway
City bus
Airport Railroad all-stop services
Participating taxis
Some affiliated stores and machines
Where Can You Buy a T-money Card?
The easiest places are convenience stores.
Look for:
GS25
CU
7-ELEVEN
emart24
T-money cards are also sold at Seoul subway station information centers and certain transportation-card vending machines.
| Where to Buy T-money in Korea photo by koreadaybook |
At a convenience store, simply ask:
“T-money card, please.”
That will usually be enough.
You may see different designs.
Some are simple.
Some feature Korean characters, animation characters or K-pop collaborations.
The transportation function is basically the same, although special designs may cost more.
How Much Does a T-money Card Cost?
A normal T-money card generally costs approximately:
KRW 3,000–5,000
depending on the type and design.
Important:
The money you pay to purchase the physical card is separate from the transportation balance.
For example:
Card:
KRW 4,000
Transportation balance:
KRW 30,000
Total:
KRW 34,000
You now have KRW 30,000 available for transportation.
Can You Buy T-money at Incheon Airport?
Yes.
T-money cards are available through transportation-card sales points, convenience stores and related facilities around the airport and Airport Railroad system.
If you plan to use the AREX All-Stop Train, buying your transportation card before boarding is convenient.
But if you take:
AREX Express
Airport limousine bus
Taxi
Private transfer
you can also wait until you reach Seoul.
Convenience stores are everywhere.
You will not lose your only chance to buy one.
How Much Should You Recharge?
You do not need to load a huge amount.
I suggest starting around:
1–2 days
KRW 15,000–25,000
3–4 days
KRW 25,000–40,000
5–7 days
KRW 40,000–60,000
Your actual transportation cost depends on:
Number of subway rides
Number of bus rides
Distance
Day trips
Airport transportation
The balance can easily be topped up again, so there is little reason to put KRW 100,000 onto the card on your first day.
How to Recharge T-money
There are two convenient options.
Option 1: Convenience Store
Give the cashier:
Your T-money card
The amount you want to add
You can say:
“Chungjeon-hae juseyo.”
It means:
“Please recharge it.”
If you want KRW 10,000:
“Man-won chungjeon-hae juseyo.”
But you do not actually need to speak Korean.
Handing the card to the cashier and saying:
“10,000 won, please.”
usually works perfectly well.
Option 2: Subway Station
Look for a ticket and transportation-card machine.
Many machines provide an English menu.
Place your card on the reader and follow the instructions.
VisitKorea confirms that T-money can be recharged through subway ticket vending machines.

Keep Some Korean Cash
This connects directly to Part 3 of this series.
Even though Korea is extremely card-friendly, I recommend keeping some Korean won for your transportation card.
Payment options for card purchase and recharge can differ depending on the location and machine, so a little cash removes unnecessary problems.
You do not need much.
KRW 10,000–30,000 in your wallet is usually enough as transportation backup.
How to Use T-money on the Subway
This is the easy part.
Entering the Subway
Find the fare gate.
Place your T-money card on the reader.
Wait for the beep.
Check that the gate opens.
Walk through.
Leaving the Subway
Find the exit gate.
Tap the same card again.
The system calculates your fare.
Walk through.
You must tap both:
IN
and
OUT
Do not forget the second tap.
Current Seoul Subway Fare
As of the current Seoul Metropolitan Government fare schedule, the adult base subway fare is:
Transportation card: KRW 1,550
Single-ride ticket: KRW 1,650
Longer journeys may have additional distance-based charges.
This is another advantage of using a transportation card.
You do not have to stop at a ticket machine every time you take the subway.
How to Use T-money on a Bus
Using a bus is also simple.
When Boarding
Enter the bus and tap the reader near the door.
Before Your Stop
Press the red stop button.
When Getting Off
Tap your card again near the exit.
This last step is important.
Remember:
Bus = tap in + tap out
Why Do You Need to Tap When Getting Off the Bus?
Because the transportation system needs to know:
Where your journey ended
How far you traveled
Whether you are transferring
If you forget to tap out, you may lose your transfer discount or be charged incorrectly.
This is one of the easiest mistakes for first-time visitors to make.
How Transfers Work
Seoul uses an integrated transfer system between eligible buses and subways.
If you use a transportation card and transfer correctly, you do not necessarily pay a completely new full fare every time.
The standard transfer window is generally:
30 minutes
and during late evening and early morning:
60 minutes between 9 PM and 7 AM.
VisitKorea states that transfer discounts can be applied for up to four transfers under the applicable time limits.
The exact total fare can still change according to travel distance.
Most importantly:
Always tap out.
Can Two People Use One T-money Card?
For tourists, I recommend:
One person = one card.
Trying to share one transportation card creates unnecessary complications, especially when using the subway and transferring.
If two adults are traveling together, buy two cards.
It makes everything simpler.
How Can You Check Your Balance?
When you tap your T-money card, many readers display:
The fare charged
Remaining balance
You can also check the balance:
At subway recharge machines
At convenience stores
Through supported T-money services
If you notice your balance getting low, recharge before starting another long journey.
What If You Have Insufficient Balance?
At the subway:
The gate may not open.
On a bus:
The reader may indicate insufficient balance.
Do not repeatedly hit the card against the reader.
Recharge first.
In central Seoul, you are rarely far from a convenience store or subway recharge machine.
What Happens to the Remaining Balance?
Unused T-money balance can be refunded at eligible locations.
The physical card purchase price is normally not refundable, and a refund service fee may apply. VisitKorea notes that larger refunds over KRW 50,000 require a more specific refund process.
My advice?
During the last day or two of your trip, stop putting large amounts on the card.
If you only have a few thousand won left, simply use it for another transportation ride or at an affiliated merchant where applicable.
T-money or a Seoul Unlimited Transportation Pass?
There are other transportation options for tourists, including Seoul’s Climate Card and other visitor-oriented products.
The Climate Card currently includes short-term options for visitors, while T-money works more like a normal stored-value transportation card.
The best choice depends on your itinerary.
Choose T-money if:
This is your first trip.
You want the simplest option.
You may travel outside Seoul.
You do not know how many rides you will take.
You want to pay only when you ride.
Consider an unlimited Seoul pass if:
You will stay mainly within the supported Seoul area.
You plan to take many subway and bus rides every day.
You have checked the exact coverage.
For most first-time travelers, I still think T-money is the easiest starting point.
There is almost nothing to plan.
Buy.
Recharge.
Tap.
Go.
Seoul Subway Tips for First-Time Visitors
1. Use NAVER Map
Do not rely only on a screenshot of the subway map.
NAVER Map can tell you:
Which line to take
Where to transfer
Which direction to travel
Travel time
Which station exit to use
2. Pay Attention to Station Numbers
Seoul subway stations have both names and numbers.
For example, the station number can help confirm that you are heading in the correct direction.
3. Check the Exit Number
This may be the most important local tip in this entire article.
A large Seoul station can have many exits.
If your destination is near Exit 2 and you leave through Exit 11, you may end up on the opposite side of a major road.
The subway journey was five minutes.
Your mistake after leaving the station may add fifteen more.
4. Let People Exit First
When the train arrives, stand to the side of the doors.
Let passengers leave.
Then enter.
5. Avoid Rush Hour with Large Luggage
If possible, avoid carrying large suitcases on busy subway lines during weekday commuting hours.
The subway is efficient.
It is less enjoyable when you are trying to control two 25-kilogram suitcases in a crowded train.

Common T-money Mistakes
Mistake 1
Not tapping when getting off the bus.
Mistake 2
Putting too much money on the card immediately.
Mistake 3
Trying to share one card among several subway passengers.
Mistake 4
Forgetting which card you used when carrying multiple contactless cards.
Mistake 5
Using a single-ride subway ticket repeatedly instead of buying a transportation card.
Mistake 6
Leaving the subway from the wrong exit.
The last one is not actually a T-money problem.
But you will remember this warning after walking around an enormous intersection looking for your hotel.
A Word from a Local
The Seoul subway map looks much harder than the subway actually is.
There are many lines.
But you do not have to memorize them.
I live here and I still check the route on my phone when going somewhere unfamiliar.
What matters is:
T-money.
NAVER Map.
Station name.
Transfer station.
Exit number.
Especially the last one.
If NAVER Map says Exit 4, use Exit 4.
Do not look at the map and think:
“Exit 10 looks almost the same.”
It probably isn't.
Trust the exit number.
Your feet will thank you later.
Before You Go
Transportation fares and policies can change.
Before traveling, check the latest information if:
You are planning an unusual long-distance route
You are using an unlimited tourist pass
You are traveling outside Seoul
You are taking the final train late at night
For normal sightseeing around Seoul, T-money remains one of the easiest choices.
Final Checklist
Before your first subway journey:
I have my T-money card.
I have enough balance.
I have some Korean cash for recharging.
NAVER Map is installed.
I know my destination station.
I know where to transfer.
I know my final exit number.
I remember to tap in.
I remember to tap out.
Once you know those basics, Seoul becomes surprisingly easy to explore.

NAVER Map
GS25
CU
7-ELEVEN
emart24
“T-money card, please.”
NAVER Map
NAVER Map.
NAVER Map
